Blogging is something that requires patience, persistence and discipline. It may mean writing everyday for over a year before you really start to see any money from it. There are exceptions to the rule, but from my dealings with other bloggers, it seems to be pretty common to spend one or even two years building your blog, your brand and your authority, before making any serious amount of money.
Those who are good with artsy projects could benefit from having an Etsy account and selling their projects online. The website is set up to be a mix of eBay and Pinterest, appealing to those who like craft-type goods that are usually handmade. The top tier of Etsy sellers regularly bring in five figures a month, making art projects their full time job.
Selling images to stock photo companies can be a great way to make a side-income without the need for a substantial upfront investment. The camera on most of today’s smartphones are of a high enough quality that it is difficult to tell the difference between a picture taken with a phone and one taken with a DSLR camera. If you can capture unique images or pictures that a stock photo agency might find useful, it’s possible to get paid fairly well for what might only take a few minutes of your time.
Set up the site. Choose a website building platform, such as WordPress, Joomla or Drupal. Next, choose a domain name and web hosting for your site. The domain name is your web address. Web hosting is a service that connects your site to the internet. Once you have your domain name and web hosting, go to the control panel of your hosting account and install your website platform. Design your website by choosing and installing a theme.
Send relevant writing samples. If someone asks for a marketing writing sample, send them marketing writing samples. Don’t send a finance article. Or a fitness one. It’s hard for a hiring manager to know how well you understand the niche’s industry if they can’t see a relevant writing sample. Apply to opportunities suited to your skill set and experience. Also, if your pitch doesn’t have a list of links to writing samples, it’s going to get ignored.
Write pitches. If you have located a client for whom you want to write, send pitches, which are topic ideas for articles. Write pitches that not only show your expertise, but also demonstrate your enthusiasm for the topic. First, read the publication to which you are sending pitches to familiarize yourself with what they publish. If applicable, identify a specific section and send our pitch to the appropriate editor. Also, include a brief summary of who you are.
How much will you make? I think my best month with Google AdSense was almost $5,000 over the last ten years. That amazing month blew my mind since it was actually near the beginning of my blogging journey. When you go from making zero to $5,000 in a month, that will rock your world. For me, it also got me even more excited because I knew there were other ways to monetize.
